Ken Caputo was a volunteer who served in a “catch all” role. Arriving at 6am, he welcomed volunteers, filled in where needed, oversaw the radio communications for the event, and pumped everyone up. He was notorious for his huge smile and even bigger hug. Ken knew race day was all about the kids. He made it his mission to support and encourage our racers and inspire our volunteers with his enthusiasm, can-do spirit, and a healthy touch of goofiness.
This award is presented to the race day volunteer who best demonstrates these qualities. We are grateful to everyone who rallied their neighborhoods, schools and community to support the virtual races this year.
We are excited to recognize the following people for their commitment to the virtual race.
Lauren Updyke wears many hats with JTI. She is a volunteer, the captain of Team Apex and most notably the creator of our triathlon training program. Lauren supported our virtual racers by providing regular training videos to help us get off the couch and ready to race. Thank you, Lauren!
Carol was hired to be the 2020 Bethesda Race Director. When the pandemic hit, Carol shifted gears volunteering her time to support the virtual event. She formed Toby’s Team and enlisted friends and extended family to race in honor of her mother’s 80th birthday (including her mom as a team member). We are grateful to Carol’s commitment to JTI!
Emily Edwards and her family participated in our first Pioneer Valley race in 2019. This year, Emily rallied the families who participate in her home school collective to form a team and race. We love how Emily used the race as a learning opportunity teaching students about teamwork, empathy and community responsibility. Way to go, Emily!
Olivia is a senior at St. Stephens and St. Agnes in Alexandria. A former JTI racer and volunteer, in 2019 she launched a JTI club at SSAS. This year she rallied her club members to form a team and participate in the virtual race. Olivia met up with one of the lower school team members on race day to complete the race together. Thanks, Olivia!
Congratulations to all four of the Ken Caputo Volunteer Service Award winners! Thank you for finding unique and creative ways to bring JUST TRYAN IT’s mission to their communities in 2020.
Thank you to all of our racers and supporters!
